Any 331 strokers in California?
been doing some research on 331 stroker kits and what might be the best cam for getting about 375hp with afr 185 heads but I am concerned about smogging my car here in cali and if anyone has had any experience with that (smogging a 331) and what cam they used and how much hp they're making... thanks

thanks... im trying to stay away from the ford "letter cams" only because i hear that they are not made for 331s, however im afraid if i get too big of a cam i wont pass the smog (which is every two years here)... maybe if i get a custom cam they will be able to make it so i can pass smog... idunno

be careful but dont sell yourself short either.
i put my '89 on the sniffer when i was out there, just to see. we didnt do the whole dyno smog cuz if it failed....you know whats up
anyways...just the sniffer and the numbers werent bad. the smog guy said with a load it probably would have passed. the NOX was only iffy thing
anyways..that was a stock 302 but with long tubes, no cats, no smog pump.
so take that for what its worth. i believe a decent cam with 1.9/1.6 heads would be ok , also depends how much your smog guy will let you retard the timing...thats HUGE. stock is 10*, if you were able to get it down to 0* or 2* your really in business

i got in contact with ed curtis with flowtech induction systems, heard he was the one to talk to about getting a custom grind cam, and this is what he quoted me:
CAMSHAFT CHOICES:
Custom Austempered Hydraulic Roller Camshaft: $325
Custom Billet Steel Hydraulic Roller Camshaft: $375
Custom Billet Ever-wear Hydraulic Roller Camshaft: $395
it would be emissions compliant as well, however the camshaft profile details wouldnt be given until i actually place the order, but it does sound like a pretty good deal to me

Here in Texas our emmisions are the same/very similar to that of Cali's. Some of the visual stuff here may get un-noticed. However my 347 passed easily with a Comp XE274HR with cats. My Vortech'd 331 passed as well with a TFS-1 cam. In fact the emmisions/hydrocarbons were near stock 95 Mustang levels. Good running cats will go along way...

Wanted to Bump this because of I found some more hurdles i may have to jump through today and wanted some input from you guys....
I went to smog my car today and the guy would not even test it with my bbk cold air and bbk shorty headers on. I dont have the CA CARB number stickers on each one so he would not test it, however he said if i did get the CARB numbers for each part and prove to him that they are CA CARB legal, it should not be a problem.
This is where the trouble comes in tho, they wont even put it on the sniffer without passing a "visual" test first. If i were to get AFR 185 heads, do they even make them 50 state smog legal?? Is there any way a smog technician can tell if your engine has been stroked to a 331?? And with a cam you would be able to hear that it is not stock. Also, in my part of California, he said he cant set the timing more than 12* or less than 8*, so basically it has to be within 2* of stock timing.
What kind of power can I expect with stock intake manifold, (maybe port and polish it), a mild cam, AFR 185 heads (maybe), and shorty headers and cold air for a 331 stroker? any input would be appreciated...
