5-speed swap = more HP

Sorry, should have explained better, car has a letter cam, or so I was told. Previous owner didn't know which one thou. You can feel the cam start working at 3100/3200 rpm, so maybe a X cam? Don't know for sure.
And the 299hp was after my swap to a 5 speed. Auto dyno'd at 269. The 1/4 times were with the auto, but it did have a stall that flashed to 2500 from idle.

Thanks, wish I knew all the details about this car but I bought it from a friend of a friend of someones cousin deal. Has been a great car thou.
So has anyone switched from a letter cam to a more modern cam and how much difference was there? I really like the cam that's in there now, great driveability, great lumpy idle, and great pull to 6k. But everyone seems to rip on these cams, just wondering the difference. Would it be a "HOLY CRAP" difference and why didn't I do this sooner deal, or maybe gain 5-10 hp and some low end trq. and "yeah its alittle better "
Also, the T5 I swapped came with a no name, cheapo, short throw shifter that loves to find 2nd gear from redline shifts out of 3rd. My drivetrain and shiftlight can't take anymore of that, lol. What shifters are recommended? Of course it could just be me, but it makes me feel better blaming the shifter.

I wouldn't go pulling the motor apart to swap the cam, but next time your doing work on the motor and going to be "in the area" or already pulling the intake, then maybe throw in a cam swap.
it will gain power, but not "holy crap" reaction like you said.
