Default 15.3 in the 1/4...wtf

So I have an 88 lx, 40,000 on the motor, longtubes, xpipe, flowmaster 10s, 3.73s, short throw shifter

now i know its no race car, but a it is not a 15 second car

all the ignition system has been replaced... my first thought is timing, or the heads are bad. I was racing my buddy with a notchback that runs 13s... through first and second I was right up with him, if not ahead, the second my car hits third it loses all its power. So would timing be the first place you would look?

What was your trap speed and 60ft time? Definitely should be quicker than 15's. If your next to a 13 sec. car the first two gears, then loose by that much, something is wrong. Yes check timing, codes, vacuum leaks,. Does it run ok otherwise?

Without seeing the entire slip it's hard to say whats up. It's not timing. Timing doesn't change from 1st to 3rd. gear.

what kind of tranny are you and your friend running? could a weaker 3rd gear ratio on yours or your shifting to early or too late.

Heres the info off the slip:

R/T: .348
60':2.187
330:6.389
1/8:9.834
MPH:71.24
1000: 12.8
ET:15.323
MPH:89.40

my other thought is the heads could need replacing...and then my friend said its possible the last owner actually put a truck motor and its not the HO

You can verify that easily. Check firing order.

On a side note, I highly doubt there is something wrong with the heads. You're a full second under the stock time for these cars in the 80's. It could be the long tubes. You give up mid-range pull for bottom end grunt when you install longtubes on a motor with as little mods as you have.

89 mph tells me that the truck motor theory may be true. Let us know what you find out.

I printed out a firing order diagram and it looks like its a 5.0 HO...

what is the difference between the firing order of an HO and non HO

1979-93 truck V8's (non-HO) and 4.2 L V8: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
1982-93 5.0 L HO V8: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

What has been done to your buddy's car that it runs 13's?
I would expect 14's from the stuff you listed. You sure it's 40k and not 140k on the motor?
