That is because the 9 inch is easier to swap gears in... It also can be built to handle much more than a 8.8.... You can build an 8.8 to handle loads of power... I have seen them go over 1000 whp, but they are also nearing the limit there on slicks and a heavy car. The heavier you are the more I would say 9 inch all the way...
