94 GT What Mods next?

I apologize in advance if these are bad questions or in the wrong area. I have a 94 GT with the T-5 tranny and its pretty close to stock. All I have on it right now are MSD 6AL ignition, MSD performance TFI coil, 70mm bbk cai, Flowmaster Catback exhaust, bypassed smog pump (if this counts as a mod) and I have changed the timing to 14-15 degrees and 93 octane fuel. Since this is very little mods do I have any hp gains from these or are they negligible. I also am deciding whether to go with 3.55 or 3.73 gears because I am concerned with traction and drivability issues with the 3.73's, any thoughts here? What I most want to improve are 0-60 and pure acceleration so I'd like to add torque, what mods should I get next as money allows? Oh and I am on 245/55/17 tires.
Thanks for your help.

3.73 gears will put a smile on your face for sure.

seanbo98 08-31-2014 08:09 AM

Ok thanks I guess I will go with the 3.73. Besides the gears I need the bearing install kit and new speedo gears right?

bluebeastsrt 08-31-2014 09:18 AM

Yes you'll need all mention parts. The gears are actually a mod you'll feel!

I would suggest you buy the install kit it comes with every thing you will need.

A good install kit should contain the following
• pinion bearing
• Pinion and carrier shims
• Crush sleeve
• Pinion nut
• Pinion seal
• Ring gear bolts
• Mustang GT carrier bearings
• Gear-marking compound
• Cover gasket

Make sure you purchase your gear oil and a small bottle of friction modifier, or buy the gear oil that already has the modifier in it.

Also if the rear end has a lot of miles on it I would advise you to purchase a TRAC LOC POSI CLUTCH PACK KIT and rebuild the posi, just because you have it all apart during gear install.

If I was you I would also buy a couple extra crush sleeves just in case you go too far with the first one, which would require starting over with the pinion bearing preload sequence.

Stick with the ford racing gears, since they use the same pinion depth method as OEM gears. After market or off brand gears may require a lot of extra work.

If your going to attempt to do this on your own you should read the ford racing install procedure at least once , or until you fully have an understanding of the job, and follow the steps using the correct tools.

If you have never installed rear gears , I HIGHLY!! suggest you enlist the help of a friend who has experience in this.

Take your time and do it correctly or it will come back to bite you later.

Good luck and have fun with it.

Yep I am definitely having a friend help me with these and thanks for the material list and tips. Kind of off topic but in a manual how do you increase shift speed and when should I shift. Does anybody have a powerband diagram for this?

dawson1112 08-31-2014 11:09 AM

Im not quite sure what your referring too about shift speed, but once the 3.73 gears are installed you will be in each gear a shorter time, because the rpms will shoot up much quicker. That's what changing to a steeper rear gear set does, it gets you to your max HP much sooner than the stockers do.

seanbo98 08-31-2014 11:11 AM

By shift speed I mean techniques for me as a drive to shift quicker and by power band j mean what rpms are optimum shift points?

bluebeastsrt 08-31-2014 01:03 PM

You can install a short throw shifter to help with the shifting. Most short throws will decrease shift distance by about 30 to 50%! making for a much quicker shift. with your 94 5.0 id shift right around 6000RPMs.

Thanks for the help

The only driveability issue with 3.73 gears is you will lose some highway gas mileage, near 5 mpg. Around town it will stay about the same, you'll just be in 5th a lot more than you used to be. Lack of traction is going to be your next issue...but they will be fun!

seanbo98 08-31-2014 04:30 PM

How bad will traction become on 245's?

bluebeastsrt 08-31-2014 04:41 PM

i don't think traction is going to be that big of an issue at your power level. You'll just have to learn a little throttle control vs. just mashing the peddle to the floor board.

dawson1112 08-31-2014 04:59 PM

I had 3.73s in my 94 with just simple mods like gt40 intake and long tube headers, and that car was fun as hell to drive. I didn't really suffer any traction issues other than in first if I really jump on the throttle hard. You will love the 3.73s, and on a mostly stock engine 3.55s just wouldn't be as fun.

Ok sounds good I can't wait because 2.73's are like slugs when starting

Are you sure its 2.73s , cause the stock GTs were 3.08.

The base coupe v6 was 2.73

i don't know if it was a optional thing or what but my 95 had 2.73s also. Got some sexy 2.2 sixtys when the car was stock.:icon_hide:

quite possibly was an option, I guess I assumed they were 3.08 from the factory cause that's what my 94 was.

seanbo98 08-31-2014 07:43 PM

Yep 2.73's were they base option but nearly everyone got a factory upgrade to 3.08's. Bought my car from and old lady so I don't think she really cared lol
