Default Throwout Bearing Retainer

Hey guys been a while but I need some help. I did some searching but I havent quite come up with what I am looking for. I was driving the mustang the other day and on the way home going down the highway at about 65-70 I heard a clunk and then the trans started to act funny. Put it in nuetral and coasted to an abandoned parking lot. Long story short I completely sheared off the throwout bearing retainer. It is cracked its completely broke and off the transmission. Being that I have never done one of these what all do I need to do to put the transmission back together
? I know you need the throwout bearing retainer obviously, it looks like shim of some sort, but it also looks like there is a bearing behind the retainer. Any help would be greatly appreciated as my summer is coming to an end which means my ability to drive this car is coming to an end.

If so that is the input shaft bearing retainer.

There is a shim behind the bearing cup that sets the bearing preload and input shaft endplay. Transmission rebuild kits will come with different thickness shims to adjust endplay. You should be able to get by with keeping your original shim and bearing cup, use some RTV and seal the retainer.

Yes that is what I am talking about however it is not simply cracked it has completely sheared off. The bearing cup behind it has been damaged as well so I am sure that the shim is damaged as well.

Youll have to unbolt it and replace it,, looks like a new input bearing is gonna be needed as well, and hopefully the input shaft it self is ok.

Is there a way to check to make sure the input shaft is ok before I spend the money on the parts to try and put it back together? I hate to throw money at the trans if I am going to need to find a new one.

You just have to pull it out of the front of the transmission and make sure its not twisted or beat up. It has to come out anyways in order to press the old bearing off and press a new one on.

If you rotate the input shaft there is a small flat spot on the back side that allows it to slip out the front over that bottom gear.

Thanks Dawson you have really helped. Is there a particular input shaft bearing retainer that I should get? I have seen several different ones for my year at several different price ranges at different online stores. Do they suggest a particular one?
