Distributer pins one off

Just bought a 1994 mustang gt coupe owner of car has moved away gave the car to a friend that I got it from guy knew nothing about the car car is backfiring through intake first thing I have tried is to check firing order when I put wires back on the distributer pins that wires hook to is one pin different then all the illustrations I've seen what would be the reason for this it does have a MSD cap on it and also what are the tell tale signs of a cam being put in the car and how to tell if intake manifold and plenum is stock

When standing at front of the car looking at the engine and distributor cap:
the firing order is like this on the engine:
(4) (8)
(3) (7)
(2) (6)
(1) (5)
the firing order is like this on the cap:

The clip on the passenger side of the distributor cap is the landmark to use that shows where you should place the #1 plug wire.Moving in a CCW direction,#1,#3,clip, #7,#2,#6,#5,clip,#4,#8.If your plug wires are routed like shown above, they are correct.Because of the position of the pip sensor magnet inside the distributor, dont move the wires from the positions shown on the cap on fuel injected engines!!!! The #1 position cast into the cap MUST have the spark plug wire for #1 cylinder in it.Do it differently and the timing for the fuel injectors will be off.The computer uses the PIP sensor to time injector operation by sensing the wide slot in the PIP sensor shutter wheel. If the injector timing of #1 and the firing of #1 do not occur at the right/same time, the injector timing for all other cylinders will be affected.

If you wanna check timing with a light, use Witeout and draw a line on the harmonic balancer at the 10° btdc position.Start the engine, pull the spout plug, aim the timing light and pull the trigger. The Witeout line should be aligned with the timing pointer. If not, barely loosen the distributor bolt, rotate the distributor until the line & pointer are aligned. If you can run 91+ octane and you want a lower end power increase, you can set the distributor so that the 12 or 14° mark is aligned with the timing pointer instead of the 10° position.Tighten the distributor bolt and reinstall the spout plug once youre done.

Some other things that can cause backfiring are a dirty maf sensor, fuel filter, low fuel pressure, misfiring plugs/
wires,vacuum leaks,lean mixture,etc.

Yeah my clips are between 1-8 and 2-6

yeah, injector timing is going to be off the way the dizzy is stabbed. #1 should be pointed about at plenum bolt you see between #8 and #4.

Now that Ive seen your picture, the distributor housing and cap appear to be in the correct position, but you need to move the plug wires two posts in a CW direction.IOW - move the #1 plug wire to the post that youve got the #4 plug wire on currently then move the remaining wires to their correct posts. If the engine starts and runs normally once you move the wires, hook a timing light up,mark the 10° btdc line on the balancer with Witeout, start the engine, pull the spout plug and see where timing is at on the balancer with the light. If its at 10° btdc

atdc( 10 ' ' ' ' 0 ' ' ' ' 10*)btdc

or 12-14° if the po set it there for more low end power, reinsert the spout plug and you're all done.If it doesn't run correctly once you move the wires, pull the #1 spark plug, stuff tissue paper into the hole slightly, rotate the crank with a tq wrench until the paper blows out, stop once the 0° balancer mark is aligned with the timing pointer, pull the distributor out, rotate the shaft/rotor in the direction needed and drop the distributor in the block making sure the rotor is pointing towards the #1 distributor cap post once the distributor is fully seated in the block. It may take several attempts to get it stabbed correctly because the shaft/rotor will spin in a CW direction as the distributor is being lowered into the block and the distributor gear begins meshing with the cam gear. When you get the distributor housing in the position shown in the picture below, with the wires moved to their correct posts on the cap and the rotor pointing towards the #1 distributor cap post, all youve gotta do then is connect a timing light, start the engine, pull the spout, then rotate the distributor until the 10° btdc mark is aligned with the timing pointer and youll be good to go.

The 1st picture below is with the 0° balancer mark aligned with the timing pointer with the #1 piston at tdc on compression.
The 2nd picture shows the spout plug. Its part of the ignition module harness on the passenger side at the maf sensor.Make sure you pull it before rotating the distributor,if you have to move the distributor to set timing.Leaving the spout plug installed will trigger the ecu to advance timing, which is something you don't want to happen while you're trying to set initial timing.

Yeah I figured out late last night that the distributer is a few teeth off once I fix it and check timing could this fix my intake backfire problem

If I put the plug wire on the correct post car wont even try to start

TrimDrip 06-06-2019 10:14 PM

you have to have the number #1 piston at top dead center on the compression stroke. this is when it fires and causes the piston to make torques and power and stuff..

actually the combustion stroke is when it fires, but you get the point. The piston is down when it is firing the way you have it now.

Yeah if it wont start, that definitely means the distributor shaft is indexed incorrectly.
The pip sensor thats mounted inside the distributor has a magnet on it thats located near the 12 o'clock position. When the distributor is fully seated with the 0° balancer mark aligned with the timing pointer, with the #1 piston at tdc on compression, the rotor should be pointing slightly to the left of the pip sensor magnet.Once you've got the distributor housing/rotor in this position, connect the timing light, pull the spout, start the engine and adjust the distributor until the 10° balancer mark is aligned with the timing pointer, tighten the distributor bolt, reinsert the spout and you're done. The picture below shows the pip sensor magnet location. The picture is of a 86-93 5.0 distributor, but the 94-95 5.0 distributor uses the same procedure.Your rotor should be pointing just like the green line in the picture.
