Don't know why they are dreaded, never heard of that. But if you keep them inside the little strap on the side of the seat that helps keep them away from your neck. I'm 5'9'' and have no problem with them at all.

I kept hearing about the dreaded seat belt issue. Went to test drive a 16 GT, the seat belt did not bother my wife (5' 7") or me (6'0") at all. And we had the belt ran through the strap on the top side of the seat.

All belts end up choking me cause of my body type,
there are clips and seat belt extenders too
There are also issues with some of the holders being pulled away from the seats

Not to resurrect the dead entirely, but at 5'8", 215lbs, the seat belt digs into my neck. Same for my dad, who is 6', 245. Maybe it's just because we're fat, the belt is riding up.

To answer the questions - yes, I use the seat belt retainer.

I reckon I'll buy some seat belt pads one day.

I have never had any luck with pads. Us full body guys need seat belt extenders. They have many different types and sizes. I ended up buying several to see which one works best in each vehicle? All I can say is the dreaded seat belt neck rub is irritating.

I have the Rousch pads that slip up and down and wouldn't drive without them. It did take a few days, but soon enough I liked them. They go well with my Rousch rear spoiler too. I think I got them at CJ or AM.

Every car /truck I've owned in last 35 years I have used an extender. I have an assortment of extenders all different lenghts, soft, hard.
in past different make vehicals had slightly different flate plate fasteners so this created having more.
Pads never worked for me. But the right lenght extender works every time. My 2020 Mustang I have a soft more than 12" extender and it works great.
I usally put one on passenger side too. You will need to be careful of taking the belt off and placing the end where it will not damage the center console.

On my trucks I used a hard (stiff)extender of about 6" which worked perfect. on the vettes I used Stiff about 4" long

Trial and error on finding what works for you. My tolerance for driving with a seat belt that cuts into my neck is about a nano second.
