clunking sound after letting off the clutch...

The drivelines in these S197's have been clunky since the 1st ones rolled off the line in '04 (for the '05 model). It's not you but it can be lessened with a trained clutch pedal foot or replacement with a 1 piece DS.

My 2013 GB which I just sold never had the slop, well not until I fried the pinion seal racing a Camaro SS at hitting a 140. I heard the seal blow, smelled the gear oil then felt the slop, no biggie because I ended up having to re-do the rear set up with another set of 3.73 as well. =O)

Would the lash inside the differential possibly cause the OP's clunk; I to have this clunk, been trying to figure it out for awhile. And to say it's normal is quite off to me, my mothers 2011 GT doesn't have a whine or clunk.

Another vote for drive-line slop here. In fact, that was my first thought after reading the title to this thread and nothing else. I hear it sometimes, but better shifting techniques can minimize it.

I can understand your feeling that something is wrong with the driveline in your 14 mustang, especially after being used to the "buttery smooth" transmission in your Honda. I traded my 13 Camry SE on my 14 mustang, and there is definitely a major difference in quality and workmanship. My Camry was so smooth, without a rattle, and I could not find any flaws in the entire car. My mustang has already been to the dealership 4 times for 2 separate warranty issues.
The mustang drivetrain is quite sloppy, but over time you'll learn to get your mustang to not make that clunk by practicing your shift technique. Be patient with yourself.
