This isn't a power related question. But what do you (with tuners) have your RPM Limit set for? I don't wind out every gear or very often, but sometimes its nice to have that little extra for powering out of a corner or just to listening to it spin that fast. My "twin" I run around with out here has his set at 8k and only has intake, exhaust, bama tune.

I think the boss 302 cars come set at 7500 stock, is this correct?

On the stock GT intake manifold, power falls off sharply after 6500 rpm's i believe. So what would be the point of a higher redline?

Bmitchell373,

Our Bama Tunes Rev Limit on CAI 5.0's is about 7300rpm. By that time the Power Band has dropped off and there's really no reason to go past that for a 5.0L with only a CAI.

The Boss 302's a sick! They really want to scream, especially with their special Boss 302 Intake Manifold. I think stock you're right on, it's about 7500rpm.

Were you thinking about going with a Custom Tune? If you're on the edge, I highly suggest it. Most of our Customer say "Why didn't I do this earlier!" Needless to say, it's a huge improvement over stock!

I plan on getting a Bama tune as soon as i have a extra $150 to buy back in. I bought my tuner from AM for my old GT. And again raising the red line isnt for power its purely for hearing it rev high "safely" and ive found myself wanting a little more when throttle steering a few corners.

This is what Ive experienced and read... The Gt rotating assembly isn't really balanced or built well enough for more than OEM rev limits. My power peaked at just under 6700rpm on the dyno and I like to shift 1st to 2nd at 7300 to hit 2nd at the bottom of the power band. I shift 2-3 and 3-4 about 6900. Any more rpm and the ET is slower because the car isn't accelerating as quickly outside the power band. It's crazy but my mph is way up when I shift 2-4,3-4 at about 6900 rpm running in the quarter. It's like 116 vs 114 mph, 12.1 vs 12.3. Or maybe just dumb luck! I'm at almost 50 runs now...almost 11s on street tires just working on that 60' no more than anything.

So I can bring up the rev limit to 7300 safely? I don't tach out often, but it would be fun to have that little bit more. I met a guy whos opening up a mustang shop in Phoenix. Last i talked to him, he was putting in his Dyno, and was having problems getting it calibrated. I want to get a base line and keep track as I do stuffs to my car. I just need the drag strip to be open when the dirt track isnt. Seeing a 5.0 with slicks running a 14.3 was sad. (no it wasnt the driver, a dusty track sucks).

I wouldn't say 7300 is safe...but that depends on your budget. The valvetrain components can be an issue. Once or twice maybe but the tune, how well the rotating mass is balanced, bearing quality and fuel quality all take a part, everything matters, even right down to the head bolts. I didn't buy this car for a daily driver so losing an engine may happen sooner than later but want to think ahead and replace what I have so we can rebuild te original block and heads. I have already started buying new engine components, starting with Manley Rods and pistons and a race prepped DSS billet crank (non stroker) I just ordered a 2013 block. Saving for CNC Boss heads and valve train.

The Boss heads are made of stronger aluminum, the same used in the new deisle engines, because the extra 500 rpm from the boss engines creates more pressure, and they can't have cylinder heads flexing on a vehicle with a warranty. Those same pressures can flex the GT heads enough to create issues.

I just wonder if they have started using the same alloy on newer 5.0l non boss heads and why not do the block as well?

The Boss engine is a stout piece: http://www.muscularmustangs.com/2010...302_engine.php

But I want just a wee bit more strength in the rotating assembly and 10:1 compression for some 15-ish psi of boost.
