I read somewhere that Ford said the cost/benefit of having DI when they designed the engine just wasn't enough to warrant it initially. However they apparently left the option open.
Horrible article too, *barf*

It's certainly an interesting read. Aside from the 5.0 being a first year engine that's been fast tracked by over a year to make production time lines, I'm adding this to my list of reasons to wait for the 2012's or 13's.

The 2011 Coyote does have some engine innards that re not fully maxed out, there is no denying that. Yes, the '11 Coyote should have come with forged crank con-rods, yes, the engine should have been direct injection, Yes, the engine should have come with better pistons, but hey, for 2011, Ford engineers accomplished all of their engine objectives without having to add Ecoboost or all of that other stuff which right now would have cost a whole lot more.
In the future, when Ford does put in direct injection and forced induction (ecoboost or a supercharger), I am sure those upgrades will be available to hop-up a '11 Coyote to those standards (although, doing so would require a rebuild and replacing the heads with the direct injection heads).
