Speaking of proper engine break in, how many miles should a person go before they get their first oil change? 500 miles or 3000 miles?

read your manual, they use a special break-in oil, i believe it says to leave it in for 5,000 miles. It's been awhile since i read my 07 manual though.

keep in mind most mustangs on the lot may have been test driven hard without any "break in". I ripped on the one i test drove very hard for a good 10mi, at least 10 wot red-lines 1-3 (salesmen gave me the "ok" to turn off traction control" then i ordered a new one ;-)

Even though I paid for it, I pulled out of the dealership like I stole it.

1300 miles on mine now and I've probably redlined it 1-3 about 80 times...what's a break in?

I too broke my car in very hard. It was being abused by me to redline almost everytime I drive it since the first couple of miles. I did see some oil consumption at 3k miles, but I added the factory oil to top it off. Then I got the oil changed at 5k to mobil 1 5-20 and since no consumption. Im at 7200 miles. And I bought this car for play/pleasure driving. Every time I drive, I am out doing 1-4 pulls to redline. The car seems very strong and LOVES revs. Break it in hard, and seat those rings. Then guess what, no more oil consumption. Its getting past the rings from the squirters. Properly seated rings will not let oil past and will preserve your compression making it a stronger motor.

The only limit in the book is to not drive it at a constant speed for too long for the first 3,000 mile. I guess everyting else is OK.....

My 2012 GT should be here in another couple of weeks. I plan to use this method on break-in.
