I've got just over 3000 miles on my new Mustang GT (I guess it's not new anymore!). I asked before about when to get my first oil change, and it was suggested I read my owner's manual.

The owner's manual states for the first oil change to be done at 10,000 miles. My oil life monitor says I have 73% oil life left.

10,000 miles seems like a long way to go without an oil change! Do these cars ship with synthetic in them? At what intervals are you guys doing your oil changes? Synthetic?

I just did mine when the monitor said 10% oil life left. I'm pretty sure the GT ships with synthetic, but I don't know if it's the Motorcraft full synthetic or the Motorcraft blend.

I know 10k seems like a long time, but modern engines are built a lot tighter, the surface finishes are better when the thing is assembled, and fuel delivery is a lot more precise. There isn't as much to contaminate the oil as there used to be on older engines.

it won't do any harm to change it sooner, mind, but I think people tend to fall for the "tiger repelling rock" fallacy when they advocate much more frequent changes. But it's your money, if it gives you peace of mind go for it.

I have a 2014 GT (1,300 miles), and my understanding is your first oil change should not take place before 5,000 miles. I'll probably change mine for the first time around7,500.

I also believe your GT is delivered with a synthetic blend.

Ford Motorcraft also sells an oil cooler ($400-$500 cooler, hoses, etc., installed) that you might consider for your Georgia Summer. Lowers your oil temp about 30 degrees. There's a recent thread on that. Arguably, there is nothing better you can do for your engine's life along with proper and timely oil changes.

I have the 5.0 in my 2013 F150, first oil scheduled change was 5,000 miles. Our local Ford service center said to wait until it was due, as it helps the engine break in properly. I have heard stories about people changing to synthetic when the engine is brand new and not having the rings seat properly. Most Mfgs will not consider a car that uses a qt of oil per 1,500 miles a warranty issue. The way I look at it is, first change go by the book, after that change it early if it makes you feel better.

n.b. do check the oil level occasionally, though. both Mustangs I've had (2010 and 2012 GT) consumed one quart of oil before the first change, and none thereafter.

The cars have a synthetic blend in them. Change the oil after 5,000 miles, but probably best to do it when the computer tells you for the first change. I personally don't wait until the car oil life reads 0%, but I feel comfortable changing the oil at around 7,500 miles.

Thanks for the replies guys! I think I'll hold off to around 20% to 10% oil life left before I get an oil change. I'm also considering an oil separator: http://www.americanmuscle.com/black-...ss-1114gt.html
I've heard these keep a lot of crud out of the motor. What's the consensus on these?

Oil separator is a must have! I cannot believe how much oil blow by mine catches. Definitely buy the first one for the passenger side if you are only buying one. Also, do some research. There are some comparisons, and UPR oil separators/catch cans seem to perform best.

The book may say 10,000 but the warranty service is 7500.

Just took the 13 in for the first oil change and it said right on the paperwork:
"To keep your warranty service in good standing, oil must be changed before 7500 miles"
it was at 7604 when it went in

If you don't like what Ford recommends, then do it whenever you feel it needs it. This is not an exact science here. If you drive your car hard then you should change sooner.
