Best In-dash nav unit for s197?
I've been looking around to upgrade my shaker 500, and I need a little help. I want to know what the best in-dash unit is for a couple of different factors: Direct replacement fit(fitting in the shaker 500 hole without little to no need for ugly plates, trim, or spacers). Brand name(self explanatory). Niceness. Function (has up-to-date technology like MP3, touch screen, navigation, and other cool features). And price(nothing over $350). Thanks guys.

To be honest, I'm not sure there's much/anything that fits your category. Just adding navigation puts you over 350 for almost anything. Bluetooth, ipod support, satellite radio, it all adds up.
I've recently been looking at Pioneer's AVH-P6000DVD. Just to give you an idea of price, this doesn't include navigation or bluetooth, and crutchfield has it for 500, which is about half of the MSRP.
Your thread title says "best", and you aren't going to get anything near that for 350. A popular unit is the Pioneer AVIC-D3 or AVIC-Z3. There are plenty of others, and it really comes down to the features you want, and personal preference.
EDIT: If you're shopping around, check for 2DIN units; most of them will fit very nicely into the shaker opening.

Thanks for the reply sir, and I am more into the features like back up camera and cool visuals and wow effect, my garmin is just fine for now. haha
2din, what does that mean? And thank you I will start my search more appropriately.

2 din means double the size of normal cd player. It will fit just perfect for your in-dash unit.
Stick with Pioneer, Sony, or Alpine. $350 is a little low for most nav units. If you want something worthwhile you might want to start at around $500. What else are you doing with your system?

Well, I'm not too concerned with getting the nav, but I am way more concerned with getting other features like a/v out puts for back up camera, infrared, night vision, etc. Stunning graphics to wow passengers, and price(below $500 now, budget fairy/wife has loosened the reins a bit).
The head unit is going in the support all new stereo which is mostly already installed. New 6x8's, 6.5's(220W pk, 35W nom), tweeters, and kicker comp sub's(200W pk, 100W nom) all up front. With new 3's in the stock 6x8 housing with stock tweeters in the back. I want to also retain the stock shaker 500 amp for some of the speakers/sub and implement another small amp somewhere else. What can I do?

I like the Pioneer AVH-P6000DVD. It looks high quality and can run the vehicle dynamics processor. Neat-o
