Default Subwoofer cutting out all the damn time..

Hey guys. I have a ten inch sub, powered by a 500 watt Alpine mono amp. A few days ago, the sub started randomly cutting out but would start again if I adjusted volume (going up and down both worked, as long as I changed the volume). Now that quit working, but if I adjust the gain on the amp, it will start working briefly and then stop again. I have checked all my connections, cleaned my battery terminals, all fuses are good. I have no idea why this happening. Any thoughts or ideas?

Normally, I would replace the RCA input cable. Since adjusting the gain on the amp seems to have an effect on the problem, you may have a bad potentiometer on the amp. Try testing it with another amp. This will eliminate the possibility of a bad source signal caused by a bad RCA cable or head unit problem.
