New stereo, display & backup cam for '14 conv

I started my search looking for a good way to get a backup camera for my 2014 convertible (V6, with SYNC)., Then I started seeing dash kits on Crutchfield, along with decently-priced double-DIN HU's that can take video feed from a backup camera.

There are a few items out there that look intriguing but it seems that some things may be discontinued and others not quite as good as the promise.
I've had this car for almost 3 years now and so I know what irritates me. Rear visibility really sucks with the top up. It ain't great with it down, either, if you want to see what's hidden by the high beltline and folded top to the rear (though that is GREAT for blocking tailgating bozos with supernova headlights!). The blue fluorescent display has the same problems that such displays have had with all of the ham and stereo products I've had in the past, in that they wash out in strong daylight. I would love to have a display (LCD) that performs well when the top is down and the weather is sunny (which is why we buy convertibles, yes?). I'd like a backup camera on the screen of the stereo. I'd like a decent-sounding stereo but, at 62, my hearing is not going to be as discerning as it once was. No Boompa-Boompa for me, either, just decent sound. The stereo should be able to hook directly to my phone so that I can get rid of the lousy connectivity of the SYNC system.

I've seen the Metra 99-5839CH dash kit on Crutchfield and Amazon. I also saw a review that said that the touchscreen replacement for the controls washed out with the top down. Can anyone confirm that this is a generic problem or could it have been a cockpit error on the part of the reviewer (i.e., reviewer didn't know how to set brightness/contrast)? This kit's around $350, I figure another $200-300 for the HU and another $200 for the camera, based on what I'm seeing online.

What have you tried and what are your thoughts on the above? I certainly don't want to spend an extra $800 if I still can't read the displays! I can just spend $200 for a wireless backup camera and be done with it...

Thanks, all!
