Oct. 12-13, 2013 Mojave Magnum/Mile
A chance to try to hit the top speed in a safe a legal way.
One car at a times on the main runway of Mojave Airport for either 1.5 or 1 mile, your choice, at the end your speed is trapped.
It's quite addicting and as you can guess there are some really great cars there attempting what they were built to do.
In the past there have been (in addition to the staple of mustangs, corvettes, Camaros and challengers) ferraris, vipers, lamborghini's, GTRs, and even a Bugatti Veyron.
Lot's of fun to participate or even just watch.
A bit pricey to participate at $499 for both days or $289 for just one day of your choice, but it's still cheaper than a speeding ticket if you were caught doing the same speed.
Registration is now open...

Registration has now been open 1 week and already Saturday is half full and Sunday is close behind. They will only allow 120 entrants for each day in order to make sure everyone gets a good number of runs. Registration will probably slow down now, but if you are thinking of going, you should make up your mind, because if you wait until the weeks before the event it may be sold out with a waitlist.
The rules are pretty basic, you need a snell 2005 or newer helmet.
To go up to 170 (175 really), just long sleeve shirt and pants of natural fiber (cotton/wool), gloves (leather with no perforations, or preferably race gloves), lether topped shoes, and "w" rated tires with metal valve stem caps.
To go up to 200 (205 really), you need to add roll bar, a racing fire suit, fire resistant gloves and shoes, "horse collar" neck support, "y" rated tires.
To go faster... read the rules, you should read the rules anyway, but the above is the cheat sheet version.

I'm signed up already, time to see what new top speed I can hit (prior top was 162.5... have a few more ponies this time)
Based on the registrations (you can see the attendee list once you are registered), there are tons of Corvettes, Mustangs, Challengers, & Camaros, also and a TT toyota Supra, cadillac CTS-V, and a few Subaru and BMWs, ewven a NASCAR style stockcar
And then some exotics like a few Nissan GTRs, a Ferarri F430, 3 Ford GTs, a Dodge Viper , a Mclaren MP4-12C spider, an Audi R8...
Also about half the entrant vehicles are motorcycles ( I still think they're crazy to attempt the speeds they get, but normal people think I'm crazy to want to peg my speedo, so whatever.)

Just a little bump here.
Little over a month away, Saturday is at about 80% capacity and Sunday is near 70% capacity, so there are still some spaces available.
Looks like there will be 5 Ford GTs & 6 Dodge Vipers out Saturday and 3 GTs and 2 Vipers on Sunday... (where else can you see 5 ford gts in one place?)
as far as mustangs of various flavors, right now 8 on Sat/8 on Sun.
I'm struggling to get ready, but hopefully everything will come together in time.

Pretty much.
There are some safety requirements that increase as the speeds go up, but basically you are allowed to go up to 180 with just a snell helmet, some gloves, long sleeve 100% cotton shirt, jeans and leather shoes, along with tires rated for that speed.
Up to 205 requires more like roll bars, fire suit, 5-6 point harness, driveshaft safety loop, at least y rated tires, etc.
beyond that it gets even more strict with roll cage, fire supression, fuel cutoff, hans device, etc.
pretty much a stock (coyote or up to '12 GT500) mustang will hit the speed limiter of 155, tuned & speed limiter tweaked, look for between 155 and 165 (In the mile, maybe up to 170ish for the 1.5 mile)... Beyond that you need lots more power.

Over and over, you have to get in line again, but usually by about 3 or 4 pm the line is very short. It takes a little longer to do a 1.5 mile than a 1 mile, but they are only allowing 120 drivers per day in comparison with 150 drivers. In a day, you should definitely be able to do 4 runs, and probably around 8 or more if you get right back in line after your runs.
