Default Cold Air intake and SMOG Testing?

I am ordering a 2018 GT, and one of the 1st mods I will (may) do, is to add a Cold Air Intake. Will this screw me up?

If I decide to get a "Tune", how much is that? Will that make me fail SMOG as well?

Intakes have to be CARB certified.

Put the car tune back to stock at least 3-days before the test...

Your stock intake IS a cold air intake, follow the path! If you can see
a filter in your engine bay, then so can the heat... Use a K&N, AFE,
or Spectre drop-in. CAI means pulling air from outside the engine
compartment, not warm or semi-warm air from inside the engine
compartment. Heat shield or not, when you're at idle, the air will be
coming from inside the engine bay, and will heat-soak the intake.

Cold Air intake Example:

Uh Oh, Where are the air filters? Hint: It's not in the engine bay... Air is coming from outside
the engine compartment, moving or not. These are the best kind.

NOT A true CAI:

I see filters! So will the heat from the engine bay... Even the ones that seal against the hood, they're
not going to be an air-tight seal! My V6 pulls in at least 1200 CFM at WOT, air is going to get past the
seal at the hood. Once you hit 40MPH, you're good, but idle will suffer heat soak.

STOCK INTAKE:

Notice the air-box has a fitting that goes into the fender-well. Air is being
pulled from outside the engine bay, moving or not.

You can get intakes that have a CARB EO. Also since you are getting a brand new car, you don't have to take it in to get it smogged until the 6th year. So if you aren't doing anything stupid (donuts, burnouts, street racing, extra loud exhaust...) no one will know if you don't have a CARB EO for every one of your mods.
I Know there are people who take delivery of a new car and immediately throw on non-CARB mods, drive it around for 5 or 6 years, return it to stock and trade it in on a new car to do the same exact thing, that is of course illegal, but the state makes more money that way as the people are paying sales tax on new cars every 6 years, in addition to high registration fees.

I have a 2007 Mustang V6 with a Ford Racing Cold Air Intake. I have been harassed by the local shops that I have taken my car into to get smog checked because of the cold air intake. One shop was overly scrutinizing my car. The technician even called another mechanic to check my car over to see if he could spot any other mods. I had another local shop with a total jerk (being nice) claiming that I needed the tuner device installed in the engine bay. I told him that he was wrong and what was his problem? The jerk had actually wasted about an hour of my time the day before, and then made me comeback another day to get my car tested because it was too late in the day. The Yelp reviews for that shop were pretty bad with people complaining about being harassed about having a CAI.

Definitely make sure that you have the CARB EO Sticker when you eventually have to get the car smog checked unless you want to take the CAI off and then reinstall the stock air intake along with the stock tune.
