While I'm waiting I'm going to install the Roush lower grille and fog lights on Jennie's car.

OK, so question....
What is the deal with NC Emmision inspections? Sniffer, Visual, PCM scan? All the above? I thought for sure that LTs would fail an insp. I can NOT delete the cats because Im running the FRPP Pro-Cal...however, you think if I get hi-Flow cats it would show a check engine light? Visual and PCM scan. Not sure about whether or not you'd get a light. My car was tuned with the stock cats and hasn't thrown a code since I installed the Hi-flows.

Why would LT's fail if you have Cats?

NC Emissions... Catalytic converters, o2's on, no codes.

19A NCAC 03D .0541 EXHAUST EMISSION CONTROLS
(c) An exhaust system shall not be approved if: (1) The vehicle has no muffler. (2) The muffler, exhaust or tail pipes have leaking joints. (3) The exhaust or tail pipes have holes, leaking seams or leaking patches on muffler. (4) The tail pipe end is pinched. (5) The exhaust system is equipped with muffler cut-out or muffler by-pass. (6) Any part of the system passes through the passenger compartment. https://connect.ncdot.gov/business/D...s%20Manual.pdf 19A NCAC 03D .0542 EMISSIONS CONTROL DEVICE Pursuant to G.S. 20-183.8A(2), a civil penalty shall be assessed against individuals who instruct or allow a person to remove, disconnect, tamper with, or render inoperable any emissions control device equipped by the manufacturer of any motor vehicle as described in G.S. 20-183.3. These devices include: (1) Catalytic converter, Looks like there is nothing restricting headers here.... or Hi-Flow Cats! so as long as I DO NOT get a code then I should be fine as well. |
Well according to that the boss under certain interpretations fails in stock trim lol.

Alright to answer some questions about instpections. I'm sure Steve2stangs can chime in as well on this. NC emissions inspections are only required to conduct an ECM check, visual inspection depends on the county you're in. I've gone thru 3 inspections with headers and no cats and have passed every time since no DTC's were on. I passed with the 2011 and that thing was smelly at idle and still passed.
High flow cats will spark a DTC, its happened twice to me however, every car is different. Doug, I wouldn't spend 400 on a set of down tubes with cats. Spend a couple hundred more on a 3" catted setup, also I don't know if you heard but JJ's JBA midpipe almost killed him. I think I'll stay away from JBA and their inability to create a system that doesn't leak. His isn't the first that I've heard to leak. Also with a midpipe and headers.... you get what you pay for. Ask Jeff about that one and how he feels about pypes. |

I know at startup my JBA mid pipe "flutters" leaks for a few before the pipes warm up and expand then the flutter goes away. |

Ask Jeff about that one and how he feels about pypes. A lot of it depends on what county you are in. Where I live, they are supposed to do visual inspections and THEN hook it up to the computer. Luckily, I know all the garages so I can get past the "visual" part. When the Shelby had stock manifolds and an O/R x-pipe, it failed the emissions test the first time and I had to put the stock converters back on to get it inspected. Even though the CEL wasn't on, there was a DTC stored in the computer because the rear O2 sensors were cut off to avoid the light on the dash coming on. When I made the switch to LTs, I had to go with no cats simply because they usually start to fail over 650rwhp... I was worried about emissions testing, but after talking with Dan at ProDyno he told me he had lots of cars with no converters passing emissions with no problem, AS LONG as they could get by the visual part. Apparently, there are different ways around the CEL turning on in the actual tune file. I have hooked my car up to several different diagnostic machines in the past few months just to make sure I won't have a problem come inspection time, and so far all is clear. And yes, some times high flow cats will trip the CEL, ESPECIALLY with the Pro-Cal tune from Ford. I totally agree with Jayman about buying a QUALITY exhaust product... You really do get what you pay for. IMO, if you are not going to make the switch to LTs, you are wasting your time and money switching anything else in the exhaust system. You will not see any power gains. |
