Hey guys so I had a question for everyone who lives in NC. I have my axle backs picked. But I have a question before I do anything. Has anyone ever had an issue with inspections by doing a muffler delete in NC?

I ask because I pretty much have decided on doing Mac Boom Tubes. I think they have a great sound and tone but are a little louder then others that I have been looking at. I don't really plan on doing LT headers or anything like that since this is just a daily driver and if I do decide to do that then I will worry about that down the road lol. But if I am going to have issues with inspections then I think I'm going to go with Borla Stingers since I will at least have a muffler and I know that wouldn't affect anything.

Cats depend on the county. I believe Roberson County you do not need cats.

I have had straight pipes on both of my cars when I lived here. One had headers as well. Never had an issue.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I'm going to go ahead and get the Boom tubes and if I have an issue getting it inspected then I'll just throw my stock mufflers on, get it inspected, and then put the Boom tubes back on

I had the boom tubes at one point but can't remember if I had it inspected with them. I went through a bunch of axle back setups in a short period trying to find the right sound.

Boom Tubes sounded really good with the rest of the system stock.

I have been bouncing back and fourth on like 3 axle backs. The boom tubes, Borla Stingers, and Flowmaster outlaws. I like the sound of outlaws but they have a little to much pop and crackle to them for my liking. I love the Stingers, they have a great sound and tone but they don't seem to be loud enough for me. So that's why I decided on Boom tubes. I know they will be louder but they don't seem to have and popping or cracking to them at least I can't tell from they videos I have seen.

I have never known NC to inspect mufflers, only emissions. If your cats are in good shape, you won't have any problems.

Exhaust has to be one of the toughest thing to figure out on our cars.

Here's the systems that I tried.

Flowmaster American Thunder - too quiet with all stock system. Sounded like a farm tractor with off-road H pipe

Boomtube - nice sound with all stock system. They do tend to rust and deteriorate on the inside.

MBRP - my #2 choice all around. Sounded with the stock system. Too much crackle with offroad pipe. Good sound with hi-flow cats and long tubes

Borla touring or S-type - my favorite overall. Never tried them with the offroad but they sounded awesome with the long tubes and hi-flow cats. Alan has them on his GT500 and they sound great on his too.

I did the spend hours of listening to Youtube videos thing and with everything about modding a car, it's all about how you like it. A lot of times it's better just to hear them in person.

(a) An exhaust emission shall not be approved if the vehicle
is a 1968 year model or newer and any of the visible emission
control devices placed thereon by the manufact
urer are missing, disconnected, made i
noperative or have been altered without
approval of the Department of Envir
onment, Health, and Natural Resources.
(b) If the unleaded gas restrictor on a vehicle manufactured
after model year 1967 has been altered or removed a new or
reconditioned catalytic converter and unleaded gas restrictor
must be replaced before the vehicle passes inspection.
(c) An exhaust system shall not be approved if:
(1) The vehicle has no muffler.
(2) The muffler, exhaust or tail pipes have leaking joints.
(3) The exhaust or tail pipes have holes, leaking seams or leaking patches on muffler.
(4) The tail pipe end is pinched.
(5) The exhaust system is equipped with muffler cut-out or muffler by-pass.
(6) Any part of the system passes through the passenger compartment.

Emissions, what a laugh. So what emissions equipment would a 1968 mustang have?
