Default 1965 Mustang problem Help!

Hi,

This is my first post so please bear with me. The other day I had a number of things happen. When I ran the car and went to turn it off it kept running ( not dieseling but running) like normal even after I turned off the ignition and removed the key from the switch. At that time I also noticed the alternator light was pulsing on and off. I stopped the engine by pulling the coil wire. I started the car about a half hour later and the engine started and ran but the starter never disengaged. I pulled the battery cable to stop this. A few hours later I started, drove, and stopped the car like normal. No problems.

The car is a 1965 Mustang with a 289, 2bbl, automatic. I store it every year from October to May, so it does sit for quite a while every year.

How can I troubleshoot this?

Al

Hey Gerthal, Welcome. If I look at your problems, one of the common denominators is ignition switch and one that is not working right could cause both problems. When you stick the key in, does it rotate ok? This is something that is easy to remove (all you need is a paperclip) and check out with an ohm meter.

good luck

Welcome to the forum. I'm going to agree with GT350R on this. I think the ignition switch is a likely culprit.

Default 1965 Mustang problem Help!

I changed the ignition switch and it seems to have fixed the problem(s). Thanks for your help.

It didn't stay fixed. Yesterday the starter failed to disengage on start up and the engine kept running after I turned the key off. With the engine off I found that the coil still had voltage on the positive terminal. When I lightly tapped on the starter relay and the voltage went away. Evidently, the starter relay was hanging up and not dropping out. Hopefully, this is the end of my problem.
Thanks for all your help and support.

Are you swapping out the starter and relay?

No. I just installed a new relay. Would the starter be the cause of the engine continuing to idle after it's turned off and the key removed?
