And you're not alone at taking your time to do the project. I'm VERY behind schedule.
My advice would be to put the 289 in like you were thinking, and save money to rebuild the 302. No matter what, don't get rid of that numbers matching 302!
I'm going the same route with my '68. I'm putting a running 289 in the car until I can get my 351w built.

Thanks Hightower, and thanks guys.
HT, I am definitely going to keep the car original, with the original motor, trans, and rear end. I still have to verify that it's got a nine inch back end but I'm pretty sure it does. I'll keep you posted once I get going !

Quick update: turns out the motor in the '68 was not original. I pulled it out - it's a '72 302.
I'll try to get some pics up.
PS I'm the proud new owner of a 2009 GT500, so needless to say the projects have not been getting the attention they should !
