Default 1966 Mustang I6 to V8 Swap "Rebuild or to buy Rebuilt"

Hi All,

I am currently doing a I6 to V8 swap on my 66 stang coupe, I already picked up a used 289 (unknown milage) and am planning to do the swap fairly soon. The previous owner said the engine ran and send me a quick vid of the engine running before he pulled it out and put in a 5.0 in it. Now I picked up the engine and 4speed transmission for 500 which is not a bad deal. Im am pretty good with the wrench but have never rebuilt an engine. I have called Orielly's (aka Kragens) and Napa Auto, they both carry "rebuilt engines" for around 1980.00 plus a 300 core charge, they have a couple of 289 models, part numbers DF05, DF06 and DF07. Is anyone familiar with these engines?

I have also called around to some machine shops around my area (Bay Area Ca) and they all want around 1400-1700 to do a complete rebuild. So before I moved on anything I wanted to see if anyone on here knows of a good rebuilt engine site or could recomend on how I could rebuilt it myself. I have also seen "How To rebuild a small block engine" dvd on ebay, but im not to sure if I would need any special tools to do this kind of rebuild. As allways appreciate all of your responses. Thanks again

I am getting ready to do a 302 swap in my I6 with a C4. Its going to be a slow process.

Dont ever buy an engine from your local orielly's or pep boys if you want a decent engine buy a crate engine or from summitracing.com. Is your I6 an auto or manual?

by the way there is a local guy selling a newly rebuilt 302 for $375. I would buy it, but I already have a fellar going to go through my engine.

Yes agreed the swap is a sloowww process. I want to make sure I do this right the first time. My I6 currently has an automatic trans, but Im pulling that one out and installing a 5 speed with the V8. I already have the T5 in the shop being rebuilt. I have heard that Oriellys and Pep Boys have questionable rebuilt engines, but just wanted to see what some of the folks on here thought about them.

While doing more research on rebuilt engines, I found www.precisionengine.com, I am planning to give them a call and get a quote, they seem to have good prices. BTW where do you live? I am in California, BayArea, I havent seen any folks around here selling any kind of rebuilt engines. Is the guy that you mentioned with the 302 for 375 around these parts? how much is your engine rebuild going to run ya?

I would question the condition of any rebuilt engine for $375.00. Machine work and parts for the rebuild are going to cost more than that. I have over 700.00 in my I6 and I did everything but the machine work.
