What gear should I run

Yes, the 5.0 crowd do run 4.10, just like I do. When I put together my first 5.0 I put in 3.55 from 3.27, then 3.73, then 4.10. I would never recommend anything less then 3.73, even for high highway mileage and recommend 4.10 for mild highway usage. I have had my car on the interstate and runs well with that gear. Not going to go 100 mph on the street for long periods of time. But I like a peppy car and run it hard on the streets. You can look up the rpm's to gear ratio to wheel size on the net to get a better understanding of what you looking for. You know what your rpm's are now at 55mph and can see what they would be with the gear change.

Click on the link that I posted earlier in the thread.
I have 3.89 gears and could easily go up to 4.10, the only thing that I wouldn't like is having to purchase new rear tires every month.
4.10 rear 26" tire and .68 fifth gear gets me 2163 as opposed to 2050 with the 3.89.

I can see where the EFI varies quiet a bit from a carb. With the EFI you can adjust for most variations in the engine and driveline build. With a carb you get what you get. You can simply set the engine sip fuel by running up the AFR to 15 or 16 at cruising speed load and in a flash get the most power when going under WOT. Not only having the ability to put the engine in complete tune, it also will tune the engine and drive line as a unit which will acheive the best results possible.

Well here is my take on the issue.
3.00 gears are probably damn close to what ford used behind that engine/tranny combo in 1989.
AODs will have a low 1st gear which will be all but worthless with 4.10 gears, and of limited value even with 3.55s.
I have made the mistake of buying 4.10 gears for use behind a TKO not once but TWICE, and frankly it bugs the **** out of me every time I use my "granny low" 1st gear, I get the best launch out of 2nd gear... what a freaking waste!
IMO,,,,,, you 3.00s will be PERFECT for your daily commute. depending on your engine build, they might let you get 20+ mpg.
If we are talking about a car without overdrive, (and the low 1st gear that comes with an od), and if the car is a weekend warrior, lower gearing might be in order....

Well folks guess I'm back to the drawing board. I just sold the rear end with the 3.00 gear.
I had made a rookie mistake and put a 68' rear end with a 2.80 gear in it when I first got the car. I then realized it was 2" longer so I purchased 66' with 3.00 gear.
Well yesterday I purchased a set of 2004 17" Bullitt Rims for my car. Since they require a 1" spacer my 68' rear end is now perfect and wont need to run spacers on the rear just front.
So now I have a fairly stock 302, AOD transmission with 8" 2.80 rear end and 225/45/17 fronts and 245/45/17 on the rear. Going to purchase Ford Tru Trac and whatever gear this spring once motor is in and running. I plan on driving this car on the highway everyday in the summer at about 45 miles a day.
