Back in the early '80's I owned a '72 Ranchero for awhile........ugly, but I liked it. I would love to have a '69 - "71 right now...........and would if not for having too many vehicles as it is!!
Here is the one I had.............circa 1984, 351 automatic...yes, that is a vinyl roof......and yes......it looks like the Batmobile........

I know I've seen El Caminos here in Texas that have truck plates. I always wondered why does it have that if its a car? I don't know.
Here we go. If you look close below Texas which is in red, it says truck in blue.

Some mini vans here get a truck plate because of its weight that still makes me laugh when i seen it.Looks like its different in every state but the real reason they made both was back then a pick up had higher insurance on it because they was used as a work truck. If you want a laugh http://www.ford.com.au/servlet/Satel...apper&site=FOA but look at http://www.fpv.com.au/gs_showroom/gsute

Leave it to some government entity to require a different plate for a truck, as if such a delineation is somehow needed.... "Hey Homer, is that a truck or a car, I don't know what to put on the ticket".
And as long as I am mentioning this ignorance, why do we need to carry a registration in a car? I mean the cop is going to call in the plate to see if the car has valid registration and insurance anyway, why don't taxpayers receive the benefit of automation as well?
(and yea, I got ticketed for not having a copy of the registration while driving my wife's car, of course the cop called in the registration and knew it was valid, but wrote the ticket for the reg anyway. Yea, he DIDN'T ticket me for the 6 mph I was over limit, 71 in a 65, so I am not bashing the cop, just the law/procedure)

JMD i think its a old law that says you have to carry both because years ago they couldn't check it.But today they can check anything about you in a min or less. But sometimes that can get you in trouble my friend got pulled over for speeding i was in the car the cop ran his name found a warrent and was going to lock him up.The funny part the warrent was for a guy with the same name but had a different birthday he almost got locked up over something he didn't do lol.
