Default new guy checking in with a question

Hey guys, I'm new to the site and just wanted to drop in and say hey. also, while I'm here I have a question for you guys. I am looking at a '66 coupe in Maryland, the car is more or less complete but disassembled. here's my issue

the guy that's selling the car has a Maryland title for it but the VIN on the title doesn't match the car (not even close). he said that it's an "assigned VIN" that Maryland issued. I plan on checking with Maryland DMV tomorrow to make sure the title he has matches the car VIN.

has anyone had any experiance with Maryland DMV and assigned titles??

thanks

Welcome to the forum! I live in Maryland and the guy could have bought the car without a title before and he then would have to go through a huge process which in turn could give him a totally different VIN number. Thats what i believe it could be, but I am sure someone else on this forum could add on to that statement. Hope it all works out and let us know if you get it! Defiantly post pictures also!!

Sounds like a scary situation to me but chances are he could have purchased it without a title... I don't really no anything about Maryland rules though
