Its a 429. The block has a 68 on the back. It says Dove-A on the side with a 5 nearby. The heads say DOOE-R. Inside the Lifter valley It says "CJ". It is a 4 bolt main.

Look at the DOVE-R again and make sure that it's not a C9VE-B. Maybe take a tooth brush and brush some gunk or old paint, if there is any present. I couldn't find any DOVE-R in my engine bible. Typically, the first letter is the decade, second is a number detonating the year of the decade, the third is the carline (ie V = Lincoln), and the fourth is the group (E = Engine).

According to my book, it may not be complete, there are listings for 429s that look like C8VE-F, C8VY-A, C9VY-A, C9VE-B, D0SZ-A, D0OE-B, D1VZ, D1VE, D1ZE-AZ and D5TE.

The casting numbers don't tell the whole tale either. For instance, mine is a C6ME-A, which is a 428 police interceptor, 1966 Mercury...but it can cover anything from a 352, 390 and 428. You'll have to do some research about markings specific to 429s unless someone here can post some more specific information.

Also, take the bore size, that helped me in determining if mine was a 390 vs a 428. The crank shaft will have some markings as well. If you can provide those, that would help.

D0OE-R on the heads mean a 1970-71 429 Cobra Jet Head. Pretty straight forward there.

Post some pictures, if you can.

sounds like a 70s cobra jet block. only 4 bolt 429 non boss block i know of and it has cj heads. bore size won't help on a 429-460 block. they are the same. crank is different. google is your friend. look it up.
