Crager Wheels vs Disc brakes
 

I'm looking to buy a set of Crager Super Sport 14 x 6 wheels for my 65 Fastback. I read a warning on Summit that these wheels will interfere with MOST disc brakes. I have after-market disc brakes (unknown manufacturer). Jegs tech said since I already have 14 x 6's on the car and have no problem I should be able to use the Crager's. Does anyone have any experience with these wheels? One tech suggested I buy just one wheel and install it without the tire mounted to see if it will fit. If not, then just send it back. That doesn't seem like a practical solution. I do not do the mechanical work - just oversee what needs to be done, do the research and sign the checks. And enjoy the ride. Thanks for any comments.

You'll need the following information from your existing rims and the rims you are looking at purchasing to compare on paper.

What's the overall width of the rims, what is their centerline (or what is their offset from centerline) and what is their backspacing?

That will give you some idea.

In many cases though, yes, a test fit is really the only way to know for certain. The reason is that the design of the rim inbetween the two beads can have a different slope or pattern which can restrict the amount of space for a caliper between the hub and the rotating surface of the rim.

This will give you a better idea of what I'm talking about. Where the top of the green caliper is near the rim, if this design is more sloped on the other rim you may not be able to clear your calipers.

I have a 67 with those wheels and disc brakes all around. Not sure how close the 65 and 67 are. My wheels are staggered also.

I've ordered them. Great price from Amazon seller. I can always add a spacer and longer lug nuts if necessary. Will update when I have them mounted.

So here's the final report. Bought the Cragar SS wheels 14 x 7 through Amazon and Everything Aftermarket. Total price per wheel was $154. No tax and free fast shipping. Took them to Dave, a knowledgeable wheel tech at Elite Roads in Ft. Lauderdale. Dave is not one of the youngsters there who know little about classic cars or people for that matter. He is a master! I provided the lug nuts, Jeg's brand, as I read negative reports on Crager lug nuts and Jegs were cheaper. Price around $40. The front wheels needed 5 mm spacers due to the aftermarket stainless steel brakes but the standard lug nuts were fine. Total price for the install including chrome stems and the spacers was $172. They hand tightened the lug nuts to avoid wheel damage and invited me back for a tightening in about 50 miles. Couldn't be happier.
