I'm about to purchase a 66 mustang with the 200 cu in. engine. I was wondering what kind of gasoline it takes? I've heard from some it takes regular, then from others it requires lead additives every couple of tanks. Thanks in advance.

Well, I checked, and the CR is 9.2:1 for your 200ci L-6, unless the CR have been changed.
Regular gas back in 66 was around 90+ octane, So you could probably use today's regular (87 octane) and get away with it. If its summer time and its hot or your running A/C, I would go for 89 octane.
All lead ever did was provide a little lubricant for the intake and cylinder, it also made the mixture burn a little slower. The reason they got rid of lead in gas is because it dirtied the air and the inside of your engine. So your Combustion chambers will stay cleaner if you don't use lead. However, your valve guides may wear a little faster, if you don't use lead. Its kind of a trade off. I don't use it, though.

I run lead in my car, every 4th fill up, with 89 octane. I also run AC because of the Texas weather. I would love to re work my heads, but I rather try to modify the engine, and just keep filling her with the lead sub. Hope I was some help.

The reason lead gasoline was phased out is because it damaged catalytic convertersandit was good for carsbut bad for people. Anyone can run leaded gasoline if they want as long as they don't have converters, you just gotta get lead additive. I run leaded gas in my race kart engines when I can't run methanol, it keeps the engine temps down and everything happy

Anyways, if your heads haven't been reworked with hardened guides and seats you should run a lead additive.

I don't think you need hardened guides. I could be wrong anybody else know that one.
