1965 intake manifold casting date code question

I just purchased a 1965 convertible. It appears to be orginal. The vin number has engine code of "C" which is a 289 2V. The carb and intake is 2V. The intake manifold casting number is C60E-9425-A It also has a three digit code of 5E3 which I assume is a date code. My question is the C60E would appear to refrence 1966 while the 5E3 would be May, 3, 1965. I trying to figure out if the intake manifold is the orginal one. Also there is a engine tag on the manifold. It is
289 65 7
5-E 551 - J

Which translates also to a May 1965 build date.

Can anyone help explain the intake manifold C60E vs 5E3 question?

C6 is 1966 but check the C6 number again, I had a few 65 coupes that the casting number looked like a 6 but was a 5.
With the casting date also on the manifold the C6 has to be a C5, you just cant have a casting date that says 65 and a code date
of 66, it wont happen.

The engine could have been replaced at one time, to be sure you need to remove the starter and see what the ID on the block says!
Thats if you really care, might not be worth the hassle of removing and reinstalling the starter. But that's a 1966 intake manifold thats on your car now, no big deal unless you
plan to concourse show it.

Here's a picture of the manifold. The 5E3 date code is by the distributor. the C60E casting code is by the carb. When I first looked around the engine before and saw a single "5" on back of the drivers side casting. Thanks about the starter tip. I'll pull it to see what is behind it.

The casting number behind the starter will tell you what block you have, but the intake manifold may have been replaced with a 66. Or, if the block is also a 66, then the whole engine could have been replaced.

RE: 1965 intake manifold casting date code question

I pulled the starter and it looks like a 65 number. There are two lines of data
*5e17*
0/ C5AE-6015E

I assume the 5E17 is a date code of May 15, 1965 and the C5 in the block is for 1965. This all make sense. What doesn't make sense to me is the data on the intake manifold. The casting code is 1966, but the date code is May 3rd 1965 Any thoughts?

No doubt someone replaced the intake with a 66 intake. It doesn't really matter though, unless you are anal retentive like Matt and I are. :D

did you read my POST, Do you understand it. you can not have a date ode of 1965 and a C6 together , The casting is just that,, a casting, made from sand. it not a stamp, you have the correct manifold dude.

I have a 72 with a 302 2V in it. The casting number on my intake is D30E-9425-AA but the date code is 2E2. The date code on the block is 2E5J.

RE: 1965 intake manifold casting date code question

I brought it an shop that specializes in Fords and they explained it. The Casting part number is the Model year when the part was designed and the date code is the date the instance of the part was created. Its possible for part to have
1- a earlier casting code i.e C40E-9425-X and a date code of 5E11. This means the part was initally designed in 1964 and hasn't had any design changes.
2- Have a casting code i.e c50E-9425-C and date code of 5E11. THis means the part was designed or updated in 1965. The last letter in the code is a tell tail sign. IT starts at A and increments.
3- Have a casting code of a next year and a date code of the current. i.e C605-9425-A and 5E11. This means the part is being introduced for 1966 and they have implemented the change in the current year. This typically happens toward the end of the current model year. Another tell tail sign is the Rev letter. Since its a change for the next year the Rev letter should be really low. i.e. typically an A. This explains my scenerio and also previous post with the 73 casting code and 72 date code.

thanks all for your feedback, john
