Default 67 rear end or rear brake problems

OK! My wife was just pulling out of our driveway in the 67 (I was following in the 06 vert I wanted to see what it looked like going down the road) just after getting going I heard a metalic clank from the rear of the '67 (like dropping a a piece of metal on metal) anyway I saw no brake lights gome on but the car just comes to a quick stop. I can tell she is trying to give it gas and the car isn't moving! SO I get out and there is something wrong with either the rear end or brake. The car will not go forward but will back up (popping and metal on metal sounds coming from the left rear drum brake area while backing but UGLY sounds come from this area when attempting to drive forward) SO I back it up about 100' (into drive way) and park it and then type this to you guys? I wanted to install disc brakes at all 4 corners but I didn't want to do it on day 3 of owning the car! Is there a way to tell with out pulling the axel whether is a 28 or 31 spline rear end? I guess I need to know this before I order huh!

im not to sure but i think you can pull out the yoke by taking off the two brackets holding the u-joint in place and just sliding out the yoke then count. unless you are talking the ring and pinion then im lost because i know nothing on that. good luck

8 inch you can count on it being a 28 spline. Sounds like some of your return springs broke on your shoes. The only ones that were 31 were big block 9 inch cars. Never saw a 31 in an 8.
