Where's SDGrant?

This is really random but where did she go? Wasnt that pace car real? The only reason I'm asking this is because of this page I just found. Click

Scroll down to "64 1/2 Pace Cars"

My car is nothing but a Lincoln for kiddies!

I'm so depressed:D

I read where one of the pace cars had shown up, in a magazine last year. A couple of brothers restored it. Maybe more are starting to be recognized as the Mustang becomes even more and more popular.

It would be interesting to hear from SDGrant though.

I'm here! (not a she, BTW). Yes, my Pace Car coupe is the real deal. It was a Green Flag winner originally awarded to Thompson Auto Company in Thomasville, North Carolina.

That article is from a long time ago, and the reason there are few if any cars on that registry is because it was initially created for tracking the '79 Mustang Pace Cars, and those of us with the early Pace Cars don't give it much thought. To be honest, I think my car is in that registry now, but it doesn't mean anything to me if it is or isn't.

I regard my personally maintained list of 55 or so Pace Car coupes to be the most accurate.

The car featured in Mustang Monthly a few months ago was a decent example, but a long way from concours.

What is the deal on the convertibles? Have any shown up ? It's really cool to see the history coming back to life.

Of course, after I just learned that our cars are nothing more than scaled down Lincoln pedal cars for kiddies, I'm not as excited as I once was.
Funny thing is I kind of had an idea the Mustang was supposed to be a pedal car when I looked at the brake "pedal" support assembly. It sure looks like it was designed for a chain and pedal setup.
Oh the inhumanity of it all. :D

I'm also disapointed that you're not a "she". I was thinking you were the Christy Brinkley of the Mustang set.

Two disapointments in one day! How do we carry on? [sm=icon_rofl.gif]

RE: Where's SDGrant?

The Pace Car convertibles came in two varieties: the 35 dignitary cars and the two Hi-Po cars. The 35 dignitary cars were not created as special models for the race. They were standard production Wimbledon White cars pulled from Indianapolis area dealerships and fitted with stripes and decals. They were all 289 D-code models, but the interiors and transmissions varied. After the race, they were auctioned to the highest bidder. Since they were not created as special models, they are difficult to verify today. I would require original documentation from the auction house that sold them after the race before I would believe it was a dignitary convertible.

The Hi-Po cars were regular production 260 3-speed cars highly modified for the race with Fairlane 289 Hi-Po engines, lowered suspensions, Borg-Warner 4-speeds, etc. Three cars were scheduled for PC duty, but only two were completed for the race. Contrary to most publications, AJ Foyt did NOT receive one of them for winning the race. He was given a highly optioned white convertible, but it was not a Pace Car. One of the Hi-Po cars has been restored by a man in Florida; the other's location is unknown.
