351c FMX in 1970 mustang grande
I just purchased a 351c and transmission for $300. I was told it was a C4. It came out of a 74 Torino. But the Transmission is an FMX. The question is will the FMX fit in a 1970 mustang and will it require any modifications. I have a 302 and C4 in the car now but both need to be rebuilt. Will the 351 fit on the C4?
Thanks

The fmx was generally the auto that came with a 351 c or w, in a 70 stang, so it should fit.
The c4 should also fit the 351, but build it as strong as the engine or else.

I just bought a 1970 today it has an original FMX in it. The guy who restored the car told me it was a real pain to take in and out though.
What kind of HP do you have. It's difficult to find shift kits for the FMX.

Thanks for the responses. Does the FMX or 351 require different mounts, and linkages?
The 302 and the C4 need rebuilds. The 351 and FMX were running when the car they came out of was totaled in a rear end accident. My understanding was the 351 was a crate motor. I do not know how many miles was on it. So if it all runs I can save a lot of money. This will be a daily driver for my 16 year old son. His first car. So I do not intend on going much beyond stock. When he gets older and has money of his own to spend. He can go hog wild. I'm putting in a dual exhaust, replacing the manifold and putting on a 4-barrel carb. (Probably Edlebrock performer). I figured if I had to rebuild an engine I'd rather rebuild the 351.
The car has sat here in SoCal under a tree since 2000, the interior is in good shape, only a crack on the dash pad where the speaker is. Odometer shows 150k. The body needs paint and minor body work. I will go thru the brakes and suspension. Minor rust spots on the body. Only the rear panel where the tail lights looks bad it has a lot of rust for some reason. I paid 2k for the car. Any other comments are appreciated.

CJ Pony Parts and the Mustangs Unlimited lists the same transmisson mount for all 56-73 transmissions. It also lists the same motor mounts for 66-70 V8 and 69-72 351W & 351C.
It also lists 65-70 V8's with 51 inch drive shafts. 71-73 V8's with 52 inch.
So It looks like it will fit with no mounting problems.

The real problem with the FMX is no one works on them. They require special band tools and most tranny mechs don't have them. The FMX is sort of the odd ball trans. Theres a boat load of them in existance , but most hot rodders prefer the C6 so they cater to those. The beauty of the FMX is the thing is its endurance. They are practically indestructable. They weigh a ton compared to the C6 but they last forever. Well..so far in my case 37 years withoput a rebuild. Just filter swap and fluid change. BTW... If you do use the FMX count the number of bolts on the pan. Whenever you go to find the correct gasket and filter you need to know this. The kit that most auto part stores sell have the correct filter but not the correct gasket. You need to buy the gasket seperate. Again you need to know the number of bolts for your particular pan in order to get the correct parts.
