There are two flavors, AOD = Automatic Over Drive (The over drive is controlled by hydraulics) and ADOE = Automatic Over Drive Electronic (The over drive is control electronically). I'm in the process of install a new 289 and a new AOD in my 66.

Automatic OverDrive is correct. They were also known as AOT in the begining. That stood for Automatic Overdrive Transmission.
AODE is Automatic Overdrive Electronic
4R70W- 4 speed, rear wheel drive, 700 ft lbs of torque and wide gear ratio.
E4OD- Electronic 4 speed Overdrive
4R100 is 4 speed rear wheel, 1000 ft lbs of torque.
A4LD- Automatic 4 speed, light duty
There are many more. 4R44E, 5R55E, 5R55W AND MORE.
