Shortening a 9" ford truck axle

RE: Shortening a 9" ford truck axle
Thanks for all the replies fellows. To answer the question about the 347, I'm guessing around 450hp. I went with the eagle stroker assembly, steel crank, forged pistons, 10.2 comp. ratio. Comp cam 274/286 hydraulic cam. RPM air gap intake. Holley Street Avenger 770 carb. MSD ignition system. C4 auto trans. Harland-Sharp roller rockers, Hedmon elite series headers, crane chrome moly push rods, Street Fighter stall converter. Holley Blue electric fuel pump. I intend to get it to the dyno eventually, I am still chasing little problems.
Well, you men have got me really thinking about just ordering a posi unit and some gears for the 8". It sure would be a lot cheaper, I'll give it some serious thought.

The 8" should definately hold up to that power. If the 9" housing that you have is for sure too long(and you dont want to put positive offset rims on), try selling it, saving some money and invest in a good aftermarket rear end. Something with a nice aluminum center section, strong posi, and the size you want--Its TOTALLY worth the money, if you have it--the 9" is bulletproof. Good luck! And post some pics!!

Just build the 8 inch. With a little help from Currie, you'll have a bullet proof rear.
You could rebuild a junk yard 9 inch, but you'll spend about the same as buying new (all the bearings, diff, gears, brakes, labor). I've slowly rebuild my 8 inch over the years and will have about $900 in it after a pair of axle shafts. I'm not too concerned about overloading the rear...if I was, they make braces to weld on and no more worries.

Well, the final decision has been made. I broke down and ordered a Richmond "Loc Rite" posi, 3.80 gear set, installation kit w/all new seals and bearings.
Thanks for all the input.
Barry
P.S. I'll try to post some pics of the car and the motor asap.
