Default New to Mustangs, 1965, research, etc.

Hey all. I just got my first Mustang, a 1965 project car. I have researced the codes and it was San Jose car, burgandy/black, 220 HP (I think) 289. Question: how do I tell if the engine is orignal to the car? I don't have the block casting in front of me but I can post it later. But is there anything specific on the engine that would tell me that engine is from that very car?
Thanks.

Sorry, nothing on that block will tell you if its for that specific car. There's a casting code and date code behind the starter. The casting code will probably be something like C50E 6015 but the date code will be three digits indicating year and month it was made. It might come close to the date codes on the rest of the sheet metal but there's nothing definitive.

No, there are no matching numbers on a 65. Look at the 5th digit of your VIN, and if that number is an "A" and your 289 is a 4 barrel carbed motor, then that would be the correct motor for that car, but not necessarily the same motor that it came with from the factory.
