Original AM/FM radio
I would love to put in an original am/fm radio - but the are very hard to find. Anyone have any idea of what the cost should be and where I might find one?

RE: Original AM/FM radio
I've seen those go as high as $1,500.00 on ebay. There is a company that puts modern internals in old radios. They may have a stock radio, I have no idea what they'd ask for it.
http://www.turnswitch.com/radio1.htm You might give them a call. The other place I'd look is through a "Hemming's Motor News" catalog. If you don't mind me asking, what turned you away from the Autosounds AM/FM repro? Just interested as I was thinking seriously about that radio. Thanks, |
RE: Original AM/FM radio
I may still go with the new Customaudio USA 66. It looks just like the original AM/FM (and fits into the origianl opening). It lets you control the CD changer in the rear, will support an i Pod and subwoolfer... but it is not an original.
I am torn. There is something very charming about going back 40 years and listening to the radio as I did when I was a kid. Oh well, it's a great deal of money (but then agin so is the repro if you go with attachments and speakers and installation. |
RE: Original AM/FM radio
$100 to $200 for a unrestored/working (according to the sellers) on Ebay last time I checked.

RE: Original AM/FM radio
Well, I must really pick the wrong times. Seems I either don't find an original AM/FM, or the ones I find are outrageously expensive. If you see something like that again, please let me know.
I'm with Timelockmind, there is something about the old radios with the one speaker up in the dash. Heck, I've enjoyed listening to Car Talk Radio with the stock AM radio while cruising around on the weekends, but FM would be really nice. Thanks, Scott |

RE: Original AM/FM radio
Smothers,
That's strictly an AM radio. No FM. I've seen these go as cheap as $20.00 |

I'm guilty of not ready the original post closely.

RE: Original AM/FM radio
I only have the AM in mine, and I thoroughly enjoy listening to talk shows. Heck, I even listen to garden shows. I learned the other day that you need to plant vegetables next to each other that are compatible with each other. It's called compatible planting, or something like that. Onions and cabbage make good companions. :D Rush Limbaugh and a local guy in Austin are also favorites of mine if I want my political thoughts stirred.

RE: Original AM/FM radio
Is it possible these origianl am/fm radios are worth over $2,000!
I understand it is rare because in the mid-sixties there were very few FM station; hence very few people ordered an am/fm radio. I love it when reseaching the Mustand sheds light on society in the past! Restoring a Mustang is like an Archeological dig!!! |
RE: Original AM/FM radio
It's true - original am/fm's go for up to a couple thousand. I have one (and the original operating manual) and didn't think anything about it when I bought the car and even thought I might replace it. That is, until I later learned from a local Mustang guy that the radios are rare and the manuals are very rare (he said he had never seen one). I never would have guessed that - thought there would be hundreds of thousands of these units out there.
Also, i'm with Soaring - get the AM. You can get one for not much and learn a lot listening to AM. That's about all I listen to when i'm driving. Never go to learn about onions and cabbage though. |
