Swap 200 for 289
Howdy,
I own a 1966 stang with a 200ci and a 3 speed manual tranny. I have had the car for a couple years and I love it to death. My problem is that I dont like th underpowered motor and shaky transmission. I want to convert it to a 289ci. What else needs to be changed besides the tranny and motor? Do i need to change the rearend and the rims from 4 lug to 5 lug? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

RE: Swap 200 for 289
ok, I am a 17 year old senior and I did this before on my 67, and still doing it, but i started in january. and it does take a little bit of time, especially if you are doing this in your garage. yes you need to go to a five lug style, and you would need a nine inch rear end, a 8.5 inch would would work too. the springs and ball joints need to be changed too, and that goes for the leaf springs as well. obviously your fuel lines and throttle wil need to be changed too. radiator, and motor mounts too. your tanny too, but im guessing you knew that. yor tranny mount can be used, and if you wanted to stick with manual the 4 spd toploader is great and not too expensive. if you have any questions you can email me at cobra427302@aol.com hope that helped

RE: Swap 200 for 289
I swapped mine from a I6 to a 289. I work great but the cost was unreal. I got a new front end now. Tie rod end to tie rod end. My 289 is fast and with lots of goodies on it. I put a T-5 for the trans and had to put a steel bell housing on it. Then I went with a ford 9" for the rear end and put disk brakes all the way around. The last thing I did was put a new drive shaft in. If I had it to do it over again, I would not do it. To much time and money.

Did you use a V8 parts car of did you just buy parts? I really want to do this coversion as cost effiecient as possible. I have heard many say that it is a waste of time and to just sell the car and buy a V8. I love my car too much to get rid of her, too many good memories.

with my swap i had a friend who has had 2 67 v8 cars, and he scrapped one of them, so igot a lot of parts from him, almost like a parts car. I would recomend that if you did this to get e crap car or become very friendly with the people who have the same year as urs.

I put hipo parts on my car. My car is not stock and a parts car would of not helped me. Well with the 289 block. Keep your car a I6. They are great motors. If you like, make it faster. Don't know alot about the I6 , but put header and duel exhast. Then put a two barrel carb. on it.
