351 W build.

So, I'm about to start on a 351 W project. I'm not going to burn through it like I normaly do when I set out on a project. I'll take my time and make this a "get me through my boredom time" project. I hate not having something that needs to be done and me being able to work on it a little at a time. So, I'm going to build a stout 351.

I'm not going real radical, not looking for blistering, ball busting Hp. I just want a bullet proof, 350'ish Hp, matching torque daily driver. I'll leave it with possible - future upgrades, but I just want to see how well my building still is. I've built motors in the past and my friend still drives a 302 that I put in a truck some 15 years ago. I'll eventualy install this motor in my Mustang as well.

So, where to start, eh? I think I'll start visiting the bone yards in search of an unmolested block. What years should I be looking for? Mid 90's? Late 80's? Any particular vehicle that I should search as a donor?

I'll be adding my own dizzy, intake, carb and accessories. I just need a solid, unmolested donor. I'll then start looking into rotating assembly packages offered from the likes of Jeggs, Summitt, ect...

Cheers.

I think I know where one of these are actually. It's been fubar'd in the rear - so hopefully the owners have not parted the front out too much. I'll swing by in the morning to see if it's still there.

They used 351's (5.8s) in everything. I would think that something from a van is less likely to have been majorly abused.

did they ever slap gt-40 heads on those in their later years? i would think for a solid, worry free 351w aa person could use the gt-40 heads (even in stock trim) with a roller cam in the .475 range, flat top pistons, and a decent dual plane intake with headers and it would be right where he wants to be... and VERY bulletproof
