Radar Detectors

Who makes the best radar detectors for around $200-$300? I ask this because it seems that the cops have nothing better to do than to wait outside my high school at lunch and just pick kids off, mine friend got a $200 dollar ticket for going 11 mph over the limit. I got a warning for going 10 mph over the limit, good thing I wasn't in my stang or it would have been 100mph over.:D

Might I suggest that 10 mph over in a school zone or residential area that's known to be under frequent observationisn't the smartest thing to be doing?

Or that it is possible to establish a mostly law-abiding reputation that will tip the balance in your favor (like that warning you gotinstead of a citation) as long as it doesn't happen very often?

I'll defer to Glen as regards the hardware, although I will also mention that the Valentine units have always seemed to test quite well (it does seem that just about everybody gets snagged at least once in their life while driving on the highway ).

FYI on radar detectors....no matter what the ads tell you there are only three radar bands
K, Ka, and X
And there is one type of Laser if i remember.
Now the b**** is sometimes you won't pick up a cop because they will only BLIP the radar when i car comes (turn it on and off real quick) by instead of leaving it on all the time, this makes it harder for them to be detected. Most radar detectors have a sensative mode to help you detect this but it can also give you a lot of false positives (makes you think there is something there when there isn't)

When I was 17 I was leaving school got clocked doing 10 over (its a 15 mph for 4 freaking blocks when school is in session) I got clocked on the 4th block. Anyway long story short the cop didn't catch me untill I was 3 miles out in the county in front of my house :)

When I was younger I used a radar detector from time to time, I found they were very usefull for knowing when I was going to geta ticket even before the cruiser started moving, otherwise, I found them useless. Yep, I would be driving around with a silent detector, then it would go mad, that meant I was going to be stopped. My advice to any driver, is tototally follow the speed limit and other traffic laws whilein town. Anyone (especially a young man) who does not follow this simple plan will be observed by police even when they are not on duty, they will make a mental note, and get you later. (it will be easy for the cops to spot your stang)

Dosen't sound fair? Dosen't really matter, you will still get pulled over, you will still get a ticket, the Judge will still find you guilty, and you will still get the points on your license. Consider yourself lucky for the warning, when I was your age I gotone warning and a slew of tickets, most (if not all) for under 10 over.

Folks who speed around town are not really saving any time, they are a hazard to other drivers, and in my opinion they look kind of stupid at the same time, take it from someone who was stupid in this regard.

RE: Radar Detectors

I heard the laser detectors they sell now are useless. For them to work the laser has to pointed at your car and by the time the radar detects the laser it's too late. I think Escort just came out with a brand new detector, I saw it in Mustangs Monthly I think. Otherwise i've heard great reviews about Valentine One.
