72 Mach I 351 Q-Code....what do the codes mean?

Hello All! I'm new here and just trying to find out more info about our 72 Mach I. We purchased it from my brother-in-law around 12 years ago. He and his brother restored it, and it is in great shape. My husband said it has a Q code engine, and all the numbers match on the car...whatever that means. We are finally in the position where we canputsome money into the car, so I am trying to learn allI can. I will post a picsoon. Thanks!

Where did that code come from?

According to my very old Chilton manual, there was a Q engine code for 1971 and 1973, but not 1972. 1971 Q code is 351 Cleveland4V CJ or GT. 1973 Q code is 351 Cleveland 4V HO.

Sorry, I posted wrong info. The engine is a 351 cleveland cj, but the VIN has a Q. That may not have any meaning.

RE: 72 Mach I 351 Q-Code....what do the codes mean?

Welcome to the wonderful world of Mustang slang. In your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) number (note the redundancy), the 5th character is the engine type. The 'Q' in that position for 1973 means that the Mustang originally came equipped with a 351 4V (4 barrel carburetor) High-Output engine. The 'Q' may mean different engines in different years. In 67 and 68, it was a 428 CID (cubic inch displacement) 4V (or 8V in 67) Police interceptor, in 69 and 70 it was a 428 CID Cobra-Jet. There were no Mustangs with the letter 'Q' in 71 and 72.

J. Patrick, me lad, the 428 in 67 was either a single quad or dual quad engine, aka 4V or 8V. It was a Shelby use and I don't know how many were equipped that way.

Jim,

Cheers, got you, I never thought of 2 carbs, I thought it was unlikely a mistake as your posts are normally very informative, it is justwhenI hear 8vI think valves for 4 cylinder cars.

RE: 72 Mach I 351 Q-Code....what do the codes mean?

Hello,
I have a 1972 Mach 1 Q code, with the letter Q in the fifth position of the vin. According to the Marti Report, the car was built in October of 1971 and sold as a 1972 model. This car has the original 351Cleveland 4 barrel, Cobra Jet Engine. Everything that I have read suggests that the letter Q for the 1972 model year refers to a 351 cj as opposed to a 351 4v.The first 5 characters of my vin are: 2F05Q. The 2=1972/F=Built at Dearborn, MI/05=Mustang Mach 1 Sportroof/ Q= 351-4V CJ. The Marti Report is good for seeing the build history and all options that came with the car. The report gives other stats too.
Thanks,
ceswert
