Where's the engine vin??

Where do I find the vin on the engine to see if it is orignal? IS there a vin on the trans? Just trying to find out if this 65 coupe has the orignal drive train. Its a 289.

There should be a casting number under the drivers side cylnder head on the block. Its hard to see just by lookin from underneath the car. I didnt see it until i pulled the engine out.

It's not really a vin, but more of a year indicator. The casting should have 'C5' as part of the number in your case. Does not prove that it is the original block or tranny case though, just the correct year...

Take your starter out, and you will see a casting number behind the starter on the block.

Yup...C5 is equal 1965. The heads, the block, intake and exhaust manifolds and tranny case are included.
I think Corvettes actually match vins to blocks, but not Mustangs.

Ford destroyed all those numbers, and not even Marti can retrieve them for you. The best you can do is flip a coin and guess. :D

get the number from where they said on the engine previously. the letter (C, D, ect...) means the decade. "C" is for the 60's. "D" is for the 70's. after that, look at the first number. that will be the year. i forget if the last sequence is a number of letter, but that stands for the month and day it was made. that is as good as u will get. if ur block is around the same time as ur car, then it is safe to say it's origional. my car is a feb of 67 made car. my block is stamped with a code equal to jan 10 of 67. it doesn't get closer than that. :P

There is no "Engine VIN" on a Mustang. However you can deduce if the engine is "period correct" by taking out the starter and looking up at the machined part of the block above it. There will be a stamping there that will give the casting year and change level. I believe only the Hi-Po's had the VIN etched into them.

I don't think ford number match until 1969. So there is no such thing as a numbers matching car and block.
