You are off with your specs there
base 289 coupe = 200HP
Hi-Po 289 4 bbl, in GT coupes and fastbacks has 225HP
Then the Shelby has 306 HP i think, it had 2 4 bbl's I believe.
Anyhow, you can find the VIN number on the driver's side door, you can look it up to see what engine it orignally had, but I am not really postive on how to find out what engine is in the car as of now, mine just has a 302, I was told it was from a 70's stang, I still don't know, but originally it has the hi-po 289. Doesn't really matter what 289 you have, you can build them up to be beasts

The engines were:
289 2v 200hp
289 4v 225hp
289 4v HiPo 271 hp
and then of course the shelby

As has been mentioned, the hi-po motor is not just a 4bbl 289. It has a solid cam, special heads, some bottom end modifications and an Autolite 4100 carburetor. There were only about 13,000 hi-po cars built in total.

I think what all you guys are missing, is that he said it is a Coupe. I don't know of any coupes that came from the factory with Hi-po engines, so we can rule that out immediately. All you have to do is look to see if it has a 2V or 4V carb to determine which one it is, unless an aftermarket carb and intake were put on it. I read somewhere that the basic 289 is rated at 200 HP, but it actually has less than that straight from the factory.

The 289/271 was available in all body styles, not just the fastback. The K-code fastback outnumbered the K-code coupe by about 2 to 1. There was also a small amount of conv's also.
