8-inch posi-trac carrier

We have the chance to pick up a 28-spline posi-trac carrier for our 8-inch rear end in our '65. We are also looking at replacing the 4.11's with 3.00 rear gears. Is the posi carrier with the 3.00's a good combination, or should I just go with the 3.00's? We have a 302 with a T10 4-speed.

It would be nice to leave the 411's and throw in a TKO 600 or other 5 speed(easier to fit). That would be real nice.

Yeah, 3.50-4.11 with a 5 speed. If you stay with the 4 then gearing depends on what you want, I have 3.00s and am gonna change to 3.40 over the winter if I can, 3.00 is nice for highway driving/mileage, but sucks for performance, look at my sig, my 60's suck at the track. Either way I'd go with the LSD, but you may wanna consider 3.40s, or even 3.25s

LOL...that would be good for me, I'm 57 and I know how to control that much gearing. But this is my 18 yo's car and right now the 4.11's are a way too much for him to handle. That and the fact that he is now paying for his own gas.......4.11=very low gas mileage, 3.00=under control and high gas mileage.

Hah, yeah, then 3.00-3.25 would be good. Depends on build too, even with 3.00 gears my lil ol 302 can be a REALLY wild ride in 1st on the street, evenin a straight line. Just don't under gear it if it has a larger than stock cam/intake etc, you know the drill on that, running like a dog etc. With my 3.00 and a just under 26" tire at arouind 65-70 on the highway it does around 2,600rpm

Ewwww, 3.00:1? Hehe. I'm running 3.25's behind my 331 and that's about as low as I can stand. The original 2.79's were brutal.

If you are worried about the driveability and safety of the car for a young driver I would not install the trac lok but rather keep it a peg leg. They are easier and more predictable for less experienced drivers in inclement weather.

Exactly..! That traction loc 4:11 (if in good shape) is worth some bucks. You should be able to parlay that into a replacement 3.00 pegleg and have a couple hundred left over.

I had the 2.79 stock too. I don't like the 3.00 mainly because it makes me slow outta the hole. Can't complain about the highway mileage though. That's why I'ma go 3.40 until I get a 5spd, then like a 3.50ish-3.90ish
