T 5 Transmission Swap

T 5 Transmission Swap
I am having trouble with header clearance on a 68 convertible, 302 with a T 5. I put in a clutch cable conversion kit and the cable is in the way. Has anyone else had this issue and if so, what headers were used and was any modification required. I am looking for a competition style header, the 302 holds 400 hp.

Gene,
I was thinking of converting like you have, with a cable version also, but now have some doubts. Can you take some pics and post them for all to see? I've already had header clearance issues with my R&P conversion and don't want more...

I don't know how much good I will be to take pix for you. The engine is out of the car presently, being rebuilt. The cable was a chore to install, I would not recommend it. The hydraulic clutch kit is $150 more expensive and probably worth every penny. I don't have any experience with this kit but would give it a go. The cable comes out of the firewall and does a 2 foot loop back to the fork on the tranny. I may try to tie it to the power steering bracket and keep it out of the way as much as possible. If that doesn't work, then it is coming out and the other kit is going in.

My 70 boss has a t-5 using a 10.5" clutch with the old z bar and long style pressure plate with long tubes and a 91 351 Windsor. Lot of pedal effort but everything fits fine. I even got a Hurst shifter from a later model Trans Am with a t-handle. From the top you can't tell its not a top loader.

Did you have do what is described below?
"We opted to stick with the early-style pushrod activated clutch fork, this requires making a minor modification to the T5 bellhousing. You will need a 2"x1"x1" aluminum or steel block and also the fulcrum (the piece the clutch fork pivots on) out of your early bellhousing. Sacramento Mustang, Mustangs Unlimited, and CJPony Parts sell the spacer block, fulcrum, and bolts as a kit for approximately $40."

I got a T-5 in my 66 and the Z-bar works fine. I also got a 10.5 clutch and a lakewood bell housing. I got all of this with Hooker long tube headers. Whats the big deal about all of that?
