Default Autolite 1100/ rough idle dies, then OK

I am having some type problem in my '65 coupe. My car has a 200cid with a Pony Carburetors 1100 Autolite. It also has an automatic trans. Normally the car runs great. I have had good luck with the Pony carb since I put it on about 10 years ago. The car seems to have developed a problem that I believe is fuel related. To start with, the car is well maintained. New plugs, wires, strong coil, good vacuum, clean fuel filter etc. Recently it has developed an intermittent problem. One time, it will start well, idle perfectly and work well in every way. Then something happens. It starts to run very rough, won't stay idling, starts really hard. It will run at highway speed, but as soon as I slow down, it gives me trouble. Then it clears up and runs good for a while. any ideas?

Look for a clogged air or fuel filter, a loose carb or base, float level issue and fuel pump pressure.

Thanks for your reply,
I made sure that the fuel bowl and needle and seat are very clean. The fuel filter is new. This has the type of fuel pump that has the filter right on the pump. One thing that I thought was unusual was that when I took the filter cover off of the fuel pump, it appeared that the filter was empty of fuel. As if it might have ran back toward the tank. Is this normal? Or could one of the check valves be bad? I hate to fool with the carb if I don't have to. I'm not sure what kind of custom parts Pony might have used when they rebuilt it. Besides, like I said before, sometimes it runs fine.
