NOX California Emission questions-1971 429CJ
My buddy & I just bought a rough 1971 429CJ Cougar which needs total restoration. It is a black/black car and originally had a 429CJ and C6 trans. We have the Marti Report stating it was bought new in the Los Angeles area and stayed there all it's life.
Now my question to any one is of the "California NOX Emission System" which is included on the options, but it was no charge. I guess it was a standard thing at the time for the California emissions program.
I visited the 429 Megasite and also contacted the editor and they arefamiliar with this, but thought I should get a post out there for more info. I can tell you all 1971 429CJ engines did not have a smog pump for emissions, they had what was called the IMCO emissions system(Improved Combustion) which included:
Quadrajet carb
Modifications to the timing/air fuel mixture
Dual diaphram vacuum advance
Throttle solenoid on the carb
Thermostatic electric switch(on top of the vacuum tree on thermostat housing)
This was courtesy of the the 429 Megasite
***Note(The 429SCJ Holley 780 could not pass the federal emissions and therefore had a smog pump system(thermactor), just like the earlier 428CJ engines. On the 429 SCJ the thermactor tubes did not go into the exhaust manifolds like on the 428CJ's but into the back of each head on the 429SCJ.
Now back to my question, does anybody know if the Calif NOX Emissions had any other devices other than the ones above? If any one knows or has a Calif 1971Mustang/Cougar or Torino/Cyclone please let me know.
Thank you,
B.Fensler

RE: NOX California Emission questions-1971 429CJ
Try mitchell manuals. WhenI was smogging cars back in the 70's we had to use them to verify the right equipment was installed. Your car probably should have had an evaporative system as well since that came out in the early 70's.

My son and I also own a 1971 Cougar registered originally in California but build in Dearborn. We purchased in 2005.
We asked the same question to Mitch Lewis, along with a few more, and never received an answer back on the NOX item. I even placed a call to Marti, from who we also ordered their report and received an answer.
In the limited searching we have done, it is our belief that our car was delivered to California, URICH Motor Co., and used as a 1/4 mile race car. Because of that usage, it qualified as an exempt vehicle for emission inspection purposes.
Our vehicle has the alternator bracket without the tab on top for the partial smog mounting along with the exhaust manifolds not having the tube holes at each cylinder location.
My email : beco1974@aol.com.
Let me know what info, if any, you were able to find out.
Thanks
Bob
