Default afr heads and cam?

Hey I've been talked out of buying a ford crate engine and I think I'm going to rebuild my 289 using the 289/302 block. I've decided to go with afr heads and a buddy of mine jsut told me he knows a guy selling afr 185's with only 1000 miles through them. I'm not familiar with the afr 185's. Can you reccomend a good cam with afr 185's? Would afr 185's be a decent choice in a 302? Anyone have a set-up like that?

You'll need a bigger cam and intake to get those heads to work well, so you'll need some pretty good gearing too, and your mileage won't be too great.

those heads are excellent BUT the 185's are for wild 302's and 331/347 strokers - you would *probably* be better off with the 165cc AFRs.

that being said if your getting a deal on the heads grab 'em cause even if the 165's would do you better, the 185's will give you gobs more power than your stock heads.

If you use those heads then get a decent cam and a good intake, and run like at LEAST a 3.55 gear. If you can get the 165's you'd be better off, or some Edelbrock heads. They have a new head out now called the Pro Port CNC, next generation Performer RPM head, so you can call them to find out about it.

302 HO block. Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads with after market springs and a roller TFS roller cam or an Engle roller. You will just have trouble with traction in the rear.

It's amazing how much torque you can get a 302 to make when built right. Even with my 3.00 gear I have absolutely no traction in first gear, except at high altitude where I live, but that's cuz I'm short by like 60+hp up here from the lack of air density.

if you use the 185's with a cam that they need you will have to notch the pistons due to valve clearence. have have used them on many 302's and they make awsome power.

Yeah, forgot about that. Anything with the 2.02 valve will require notched pistons.

afr's site has recommended cams for the 302 with 165's and 185's

Rob, I have a set of Twisted Wedge heads I might be interested in trading you. I need bigger heads and you need smaller heads. And mine will work with stock pistons. I PMed you but I'll post the pics in case I miss you. I will be gone to Fairbanks for several weeks. BRRRR! Mine are the 61cc heads with 2.02's and 1.60's. The springs are good to a 540 lift.
