Blinkers....

I have a problem with my blinkers... they work when I am cruising, but when i step on the brake, they stop working. When I let off the brake they blink again. Any ideas as to what can be causing this? I thought it may be a bad ground somewhere??? Thought i would ask the experts first....

Yes..start by checking the grounds in the trunk. Clean each bulb socket and bulb also with steel wool.

Happened to me once with a 1980 Chvy Monza. Some heavy material I had placed in the trunk had broken one of the wires. It affected the brake lights too so be careful about driving until you check those.

The blinkers and brake lites come thru the turn signal switch, if the grounds are good it's in the switch.

I had the same thing. I tried some wire work (I cant do wiring) and short something out. It ended up melting the plastic cam and the plastic piece the turn signal cam sit on. Had to replace the whole thing. For a 65 you can get the whole assy. with wiring for about $30 from Mustangs Plus I believe.

And if you go on the mustangs mothly web page, you can download how to replace the switch.

Before you do any replacing of the switch, check the bulb itself. My dad had replaced my bulb for me while I was doing some underhood wiring work. Well, after completing the work my lights were doing all sorts of crazy things. The blinkers wouldn't work right if I had the headlights on, the gauge lights and parking lights would come on every time I hit the brakes, etc. We checked all wiring over and over. In the end, all it was is he didn't put the new bulb in correctly and it wasn't grounding right. So all the wiring was good, just the bulb itself wasn't grounding in the socket. Easy fix, but took hours of needless work to figure out.

Thanks guys, sounds like i'll start by looking at all the bulbs to make sure they are connecting properly. Then move to the wiring.
