as to the fuel cell thing: I have heard that you can pick some up that have VERY minor scratches, dents etc. that racers have taken out for that reason for really, really cheap.

Look on dodgestang's site,he has a tire/wheel fitment section. With the right backspacing even on a 65, you can fit 255/265 wide tireson 17's or 18's.

Im tubbing the rear end of my 65 this this week and i have really been contemplating a way to move my leaf springs in more. problem i am going to run into is the gas tank is too wide. any suggestions for a narrower gas tank that does not cost a fortune?
I have a new, never used 16 gallon fuel cell that is narrower than the stock fuel tank with a custom bracket that will mount it in the stock floor location. I'm not using it....$200 + shipping and it should solve your problem (comes with the sender to). The only draw back is it doesn't appear possible to hook it up with the stock fill location which is why I never used it.

In this configuration you should be able 2+ inches on each side and still mount it 'down' so you can still have a truck for things like tools and a spare.

would you just fill the tank up from inside the trunk?

Yes you would open the truck, pop the lid and fill the fuel cell.

I think several companies make kits to adapt fuel cells to use the stock fill location. The cheaper way would be to just carry a funnel in the trunk. You could then remove the filler cap and have some metal welded in and paint it over etc, give the rear a clean look by eliminating the fill cap, maybe put an emblem in it's place.

I would just get rear coilover set up then you can run some wider wheels that won't rub.
